Houses built on speculation by construction companies for purchase by middle class home buyers became a growing trend in the early twentieth century.  Robert and Archie Rice’s houses were both affordable and fashionable, and middle class families could move into nice neighborhoods like Irvington, which had previously been reserved only for the upper class.

The Rice brothers were contractors who used commonly available plans from the Craftsman magazine or other sources to design their homes, including a number possibly designed in collaboration with P.A. Carlander.  They favored the Craftsman Foursquare, and to date thirty-five of their well-crafted homes have been positively identified in and around Irvington, contributing significantly to its historic character.

Join historic preservation consultants Kimberli Fitzgerald and Amy McFeeters-Krone to re-discover these gems which were uncovered during the course of their nomination to the National Register of the Norris Gregg House. This program is presented to coordinate with the Historic Irvington Home Tour (featuring 3 Rice Brothers Homes) and Portland Bungalow Show - a veritable feast for Arts and Crafts enthusiasts!

Pre-registration is required, either here at our website or using the coupon in the newsletter.
