The Friends of Ladd Carriage House maintains a website devoted to saving the building and to documenting its history. |
The Friends of Ladd Carriage House is a community service group founded in 2005 to advocate for the preservation and restoration of the Ladd Carriage House. The organization's membership includes preservationists, historians, architects, civic leaders, college students and concerned citizens working to preserve this critical piece of Portland's 19th century history. In April, 2008, the Friends of Ladd Carriage House formally became an active committee of the Architectural Heritage Center/Bosco Milligan Foundation. Since a large majority of FOLCH members are also members of the AHC, this was a logical step in light of the AHC's recent commitment to ramp up its community advocacy programs in support of historic preservation.
Relocating the Carriage House was part of the first phase of Ladd, a 23-story residential apartment project (including both retail stores plus office space for First Christian Church in the ground floor levels) located in the heart of Portland's Cultural District. Construction requirements, including an underground parking garage, necessitated the move of the building from its original site to a temporary location. To make the move possible, the 6th Church of Christ Scientist generously agreed to the use of their parking lot at 10th and Columbia for the temporary storage of the Carriage House. To see the move in a remarkable time-lapse video taken by staff of The Oregonian, click here.
| Costs of the move and of the initial rehabilitation of the LCH are being borne by Opus NW. While some of their costs will be recouped by the sale of the building to a new owner (see above), there will remain a significant shortfall which will constitute a direct, very tangible contribution by Opus NW to the preservation of one of Portland's most treasured historic buildings. |

Saving the Ladd Carriage House is a remarkable story of public spiritedness by two of the largest commercial real estate developers operating in the Portland Area, Opus NW and their original partner in the Ladd apartment project, Carroll Investments. Read more here...
The Friends have agreed to fund the design, creation and installation of a permanent memorial plaque dedicated to the memory of William S. Ladd and his iconic Carriage House. This plaque will be installed in the courtyard of the building at the corner of Broadway and Columbia. The plaque will be cast in bronze and be installed sometime in May, 2009. We invite donations from the preservation community. These can be sent to the Architectural Heritage Center and marked “Ladd Carriage House Special Fund.”
