Mission Statement: The mission of the Kitchen Revival Tour is to educate the general public about the evolution of kitchens in the Pacific Northwest by showcasing the most period appropriate and historically accurate kitchens in the Portland area. Kitchens on the tour must represent a period of history that dates back at least fifty years, but the kitchen need not match the period of the house it is located in. Through education, the tour is intended to encourage people to save period kitchens where possible or to renovate in a historically appropriate manner as necessary. Ideally, the Kitchen Tour will feature no more than eight kitchens covering, as broadly as possible, the 1880s through the 1950s. Duplicates within specific eras are acceptable as long as different styles are being featured.
Criteria: The evaluation criteria will be specific to the time period of the kitchen being presented. What qualifies as “historically accurate” will be evaluated against images of kitchens from the specific period in question. Multiple period images of kitchens covering a range of styles will be provided for use in the field to help evaluators visualize the criteria. There will be a packet of images for each specific period. Period images are to be used to determine the authenticity of elements in question.
Rating System: Kitchen ratings are based on the percentage of intact original building materials and the amount of historically appropriate materials/style. Ratings are given for both individual aspects, as well as for the kitchen overall. A rating below fifty percent is considered “non-contributing” (N/C) and has a 0 point rating. Ninety percent and above is considered “excellent” and gets the highest rating of 5 points. To rate a kitchen, the evaluator checks the rating for each evaluation criterion in rows 1 through 11 of the evaluation form (page 2 of this document). The total number of points is then added together and compared in row 12 against the maximum total of 55 points; A percentage score is then determined. For example, if the total of row 1-11 is 45 then the score is 45/55 or 82% (round up or down to the nearest point).
Tour Eligibility: Ideally, the Kitchen Tour will showcase only kitchens scoring above 80%. In some instances a lower rated kitchen may be included on the tour depending on circumstances. Kitchens rated below 70% are not eligible for the tour. All kitchens selected for the tour must add educational value. This can be accomplished in the following ways:
