The CENTRAL EASTSIDE contains a diverse mix of businesses, industries, makers, and creatives that contribute to a unique and innovative environment. We are marking the launch of a new guidebook of the area, Touring the Central Eastside: History + Architecture, with an event that celebrates the many things that make this district distinct. This guidebook was produced by the Architectural Heritage Center, a nonprofit on the Central Eastside, with support from Central Eastside Together.
Take a walking tour
Kevin Cavenaugh of Guerilla Development will lead a tour of the Tree Farm (SW 3rd/Morrison), departing The Melody Event Center at 4:30. The Architectural Heritage Center will give short tours at 4:45 and 5:00pm that feature the history and architecture contained in just a few city blocks surrounding The Melody Event Center.
Explore district merchants and makers
Event vendors include refreshments by Cooper’s Hall, Chuckanut Brewery, The Melody Event Center, New Deal Distillery, Rose + Lincoln, and Well Spent Market; design district displays from Appetite Staging, Revive Gardens, Cargo and Miller Paint, Classique Floors, Classic Sash and Door and City Liquidators; and local business and community vendors Architectural Heritage Center, Central Eastside Industrial Council, Friends of Green Loop, Kuto, Milagro Theatre, MetroPaint, Portland Street Art Alliance, Portland Streetcar, Shaking Tree Theatre, House of Tasty, Altar PDX, Art Design Xchange/JAJA PDX, First Friday, Hygiene For All, My People’s Market, The Vessel Society and The Portland Girl. Raffle prizes include baskets from Sheridan Fruit Company, theatre tickets, and more!
Take a quick dive into our architecture
The district was shaped by its early industry and “produce row” businesses. Jonathan Malsin, principal at Beam Development and real estate developer and designer Kevin Cavenaugh share some of the joys and challenges of creating and re-using buildings in the architectural spirit of the neighborhood.
Get your guidebook
Each guest will get a copy of Touring the Central Eastside: History + Architecture! This guidebook journeys through the district’s unique historic architecture and highlights the evolution of the Central Eastside, from its industrial roots in the 19th century to its evolution as a center for IT innovation, maker spaces, and tourism.
The after party
From 6-9pm, The Get Down, a newly renovated performance space on the lower level of The Melody Event Center will be open for party guests. Be social, enjoy a no host bar and small plates, play pool, and explore this former speakeasy turned music venue!
