William S. Ladd had the Ladd Block Building constructed at the corner of SW 1st and Columbia Streets in 1881. The building was designed by Justus Krumbein.

Unfortunately, the Ladd Block was first replaced by a parking lot in the 1960's, as was many of Justus Krumbein's staple buildings in Portland.

While the Ladd Block Building may be gone, parts and pieces of it remain. Some of the cast iron pieces from the Ladd Block are on the Umqua Bank Plaza building, built in the 1970's, replacing the previously built parking lot. The AHC is grateful to have a piece of such an iconic building.

This piece was donated to the AHC by Christopher Boyd in 2006.
