Make an Impact – Join the Advocacy Committee!

As you may have noticed from our recent Advocacy Alerts, policies that protect and steward our historic homes, mainstreets, neighborhoods, and public spaces are under attack like never before. We are expanding our Advocacy Committee to mount an aggressive effort to counter these misguided and harmful efforts and to educate policy makers on the many ways preservation and reuse is one of the keys to creating housing, reviving downtown, fighting climate change, and saving our diverse cultural heritage.

The Advocacy Committee plays an essential role in this critical work by:

  • Conducting research on issues or historic places proposed for our Watch List.

  • Serving to represent Portland’s four new city council districts and participating in meetings with district council members or their staff

  • Writing newsletter articles and position statements (in collaboration with staff)

  • Developing and managing content for the Advocacy section of the AHC website

We are actively seeking to expand the committee roster with 5 – 7 new volunteers who have a passion for preservation and are proficient in writing, conducting online research, and community engagement

The committee meets monthly on the 3rd Wednesday at 4pm for 60-90 minutes, usually via Zoom, and we estimate that tasks taken by its members may require an additional 2 – 4 hours per month. The committee is chaired by Peggy Moretti, formerly the AHC’s interim Executive Director and former Executive Director of Restore Oregon, and by Board president, John Liu.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please email a short paragraph noting your background, skills and the City Council district in which you live to: info@visitahc.org. Please put “Advocacy Committee” in the subject line.

Thank you!
