The Architectural Heritage Center conducted a survey for Mayor and City Council candidates to see how they feel about key planning and cultural preservation issues.
Key survey takeaways:
96% of candidates surveyed supported a state Rehabilitation Tax Credit as a priority for the City’s legislative agenda.
96% of respondents noted concerns about affordable housing yet also have concerns about development impacts and unintended consequences of zoning changes that may incentivize demolition, gentrification, and erasure of cultural heritage. 50% were somewhat concerned, 46% were very concerned.
79% of respondents agreed that new infill buildings within older historic areas (designated or not) should relate to the surrounding context of the neighborhood to retain the district’s unique qualities and identity.
61% of respondents ranked the benefits of historic preservation as a draw for tourism and a high priority when planning and setting policy.
