The Architectural Heritage Center conducted a survey for Mayor and City Council candidates to see how they feel about key planning and cultural preservation issues.

Key survey takeaways:

  • 96% of candidates surveyed supported a state Rehabilitation Tax Credit as a priority for the City’s legislative agenda.

  • 96% of respondents noted concerns about affordable housing yet also have concerns about development impacts and unintended consequences of zoning changes that may incentivize demolition, gentrification, and erasure of cultural heritage. 50% were somewhat concerned, 46% were very concerned.

  • 79% of respondents agreed that new infill buildings within older historic areas (designated or not) should relate to the surrounding context of the neighborhood to retain the district’s unique qualities and identity.

  • 61% of respondents ranked the benefits of historic preservation as a draw for tourism and a high priority when planning and setting policy.
