Are the Places that Make Portland Authentic, Colorful, Poignant, Beautiful, Friendly, Livable, Sustainable and Unique Worth Saving?

We think so! The historic fabric that characterizes many of our neighborhoods and main streets tells our diverse stories, shelters families, incubates businesses, attracts tourism, and creates a unique sense of place that most major cities have lost. It’s one of Portland’s most valuable assets. But it needs thoughtful, active stewardship or it will be lost.

Our goal is not to freeze places in amber but to:

  • Promote good density and compatible, well-designed new development.

  • Prioritize and incentivize building reuse as the fastest and best way to create needed housing.

  • Make restoration and reuse a central tenet of the Metro Area’s climate resilience plan. Buildings are our biggest renewable resource.

  • Retain the continuity and story of our historic and conservation districts.

Preservation and Reuse Creates Housing, Lowers Emissions, and Honors our Cultural Diversity

The staff of the AHC is supported in its advocacy work by a volunteer Advocacy Committee, which meets monthly to manage our Watch List, engage with city and state government on important policy and legislative initiatives, and provide input on AHC educational programs and exhibits.
