Wooden Ladd Block Head, ca 1881

Ladd Block was one of the most decorated buildings in Portland. In a past Collection Feature, we focused on the tin wolf head as well as the life of the Ladd Block itself.

Built in 1881 by German born architect, Justus Krumbein, the Ladd Block was full of intricate cast iron pieces. This piece, however, stood out because it was made from hand carved wood. You can see the head on the 2nd floor, just above two windows.

The building was demolished in 1965 for a parking lot. The loss of the Ladd Block was the impetus for the passage of Portland City Ordinance 33.120 meant to protect and maintain historic structures.
